How do you add some pizazz to a regular reader, a book that helps children grow comfortable with reading (and learn to love it)?
Why, add surfing lingo, of course!
That’s just what Lisa Pliscou did. Her new “reader,” Dude: Fun with Dude and Betty, is a fun new twist on ready-to-read books.
It’s likened to a modern-day, California-enhanced Dick and Jane, complete with a canine sidekick, Bud, an Airedale terrier who’s awesome at catching frisbees on the beach.
Come along with Dude and his “righteous surf bunny” friend Betty as they head for the sand and take on some gnarly waves. Learn new vocabulary while enjoying Tom Dunne’s vintage-style illustrations, all the while picking up surf-worthy expressions that are sure to encourage smiles. (“Bodacious?” “Bummer,” anyone?)
My kids find reading this book an absolute blast, and listening to them sound out these culturally savvy words is, I must admit, is mighty entertaining and cute!
