Review: David Tobocman’s “Lemonade School”

A couple of years ago we were able to listen to and review David Tobocman’s introductory album, “I Count to Ten and Other Very Helpful Songs.” His lyrical expertise and soothing musical sounds instantly made that album a hit at our house.

David recently contacted me about reviewing his latest venture, the album “Lemonade School.”

Instantly our family bonded with the first track, a well-done cover of the Beatles’ tune “Hello, Goodbye.” Tobocman does it well and pays great tribute to that song in a familiar way, not distorting it beyond recognition (which is one of my pet peeves).

The second song (“The Neighborhood”) reminds me of a musical melange of Neil Diamond and Stevie Wonder. It’s an aural blend of notes and sounds that is just good to have in the background during a low-key day at home.

There’s a bit of trip-hop with rap thrown in in the hilarious “Yaysayers,” and “Spooky Stuff,” with its minor keys and chords and playfully sinister sounds, reminds us that “we don’t need to be afraid.”

And let’s not forget the parting tune, “Rope Around the Moon.” Like with his first CD, Tobocman wraps up this album with a soothing, meandering lullaby that’s sure to pacify any little one’s fitful dreams.


Tobocman’s songwriting is exceptionally professional and undoubtedly resounds life truths, deep thoughts, and naturistic observations in a way that little ears and parents will all understand and enjoy. This CD is like a relaxing vacation in a shrink-wrapped case.
