The month of May (just around the corner) is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and released just in time to commemorate Asian culture and folklore is a new Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVD.
Ever since childhood, I’ve been intensely interested in and fascinated by Asian history and cultures. In fact, the title story on this DVD, Tikki Tikki Tembo, was one of my absolute favorite children’s books growing up. I’m super excited to be able to share it with my own children, it now brought to live in a beautiful, animated fashion.
Tikki Tikki Tembo…and more stories to celebrate Asian heritage was released by Scholastic/NewVideo yesterday. Six magical stories are included in this treasury:
Tikki Tikki Tembo explains why long names are no longer chosen for Chinese children.
The Tale of the Mandarin Ducks tells of a couple who put their lives on the line for a pair of Mandarin ducks.
The Stonecutter is a retro-illustrated tale of a Japanese stonecutter who longs for a more prestigious life.
Lon Po Po: A Red-Riding Hood Story from China is a refreshing and different version of a popular and much-loved tale.
Sam and the Lucky Money tells of a boy who has to decide how to spend the lucky money he receives at Chinese New Year.
This DVD contains more that 60 minutes of beautifully animated folklore narrated by notable Asian actors. As with other Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVDs, this production also includes read-along captioning to strengthen reading and comprehension skills.
You can purchase Tikki Tikki Tembo….and more stories to celebrate Asian heritage directly from Scholastic/NewVideo for $14.95 — or look for it wherever DVDs are sold.
