Digital Recording Lab = Review + Giveaway

What is it? GeoSafari’s Digital Recording Lab.

It’s a product from Educational Insights that caught my son’s (and husband’s) eye a few months back. It’s everything techy-scientific-digital-tinkery-experimenty. Right up my son’s alley (and his dad’s). Something they can work on together and enjoy alongside each other!

We were fortunate enough to receive the Digital Recording Lab from the generous folks at Educational Insights….to try out and experiment with! It didn’t take long before G had opened the packaging, disposed of the plastic wrap, and extracted the lab, ready for adventure!

Three basic things are included: The roughly 15″ x 15″ recording circuit board, a bag of hook-up wires, and an instruction manual. The manual doesn’t just illustrate step-by-step activities — it methodically teaches your child the fundamentals of electric circuitry….including but not limited to “the world of sound and voice recording and modulation.” Each project is classified by difficulty level.

All in all, the Digital Recording Lab includes instructions for creating 20 exciting sound experiments and 30 circuit projects! Take a look at a few of them:

~ Humidity detector
~ Voice recordings with slowed down playback
~ Robot voice (my son’s personal favorite)
~ Electronic parrot

There are written, numbered instructions as well as very detailed maps and drawings of the circuit board and appropriate connections. There is a “key” for each of the kit’s component’s electronic symbol (such as ceramic capacitor, transistor, and photoresistor).

Though this Digital Recording Lab is intended for ages 10 and up, G had no trouble completing many of the projects with minimal help. It is clear that he will soon be constructing circuitry on his own in no time at all.

We love that this kit isn’t merely a toy — it’s a teaching tool with truly applicable (and fundamental) lessons. The capacitors and resistors are real-life capacitors and resistors found in everyday electronic gadgets. You can’t get more authentic than that.

GeoSafari’s Digital Recording Lab is the perfect kit for kids who love all things electric — kids who love to experiment with everything. This kit allows G to fiddle with battery-powered circuits and create numerous real-world “gadgets” within the safe confines of a kit intended just for little guys and gals.

You can purchase GeoSafari’s Digital Recording Lab for $49.99 directly from Educational Insights. (Or use their handy store locator to find other stores near you that carry their products!)

Win it! Thanks to Educational Insights, I can give away to one of you one GeoSafari Digital Recording Lab!
