Scholastic Celebrates African American History

Just in time for African American History Month, Scholastic releases a brand new DVD celebrating civil rights icons. March On! The Day My Brother Martin Changed the World…and More Stories About African American History hits the store shelves on January 12th. It is another release adding to a long line of Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVD presentations.
The title story is a book written by Dr. Martin Luther King’s sister, Christine King Ferris. It is a heartfelt and inspiring retelling of the momentous speech Dr. King made during the civil rights March on Washington in 1963. The tales is narrated by Lynn Whitfield and includes audio clips of the song and speech heard on that famous day.
Three more re-tellings of historical civil rights-related events complete this DVD, each adapted from award-winning children’s books on the subject:
~ Martin’s Big Words (adapted from the book by Doreen Rapport), which is a general biographical story of Dr. King
~ Rosa (written and narrated by Nikki Giovanni), which tells of the December 1, 1955 bus ride that made Rosa Parks a notable figure in history
~ Henry’s Freedom Box: A True Story from the Underground Railroad (based on the book by Ellen Levine), tells the compelling tale of the young slave boy who mails himself to freedom.
All together, these stories have won 15 national awards, including the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children’s Video. With these excellent presentations including beautiful music, well-done narration, and superior animation of flat illustrations, these memorable and poignant stories can come to life for a new and younger generation.
