Night

Released just in time for this Christmas season, Scholastic’s special edition 2-DVD set The Night Before Christmas…and more classic holiday tales is here!

This deluxe, sparkly-boxed DVD set is part of the award-winning Scholastic Storybook Treasures collection. Twelve beloved tales fill these 2 DVDs…over two hours of classic holiday tales retold!

The Night Before Christmas…and more classic holiday tales disc has the classic title story (written by Clement C. Moore) narrated by actor Anthony Edwards. Six more holiday tales appear here, including In the Month of Kislev (adapted from a story by Nina Jaffe and narrated by Theodore Bikel), Seven Candles for Kwanzaa (adapted from a story by Andrea Davis Pinckney and Brian Pinckney, narrated by Alfre Woodard), Too Many Tamales (presented both in English and Spanish, and adapted from a story by Gary Soto), The Little Drummer Boy (with animated illustrations by Ezra Jack Keats) and two Rosemary Wells classics, Max’s Christmas (narrated by Jenny Agutter and Rex Robbins) and Morris’ Disappearing Bag.

My kids love Too Many Tamales, with its all-too-familiar theme of owning up to one’s mistakes, a very “grown-up” thing to do. (A Spanish version of this tale is a bonus track on this DVD.) And anyone familiar with the popular Max cartoon series will recognize the characters in Rosemary Wells’ tales. Morris’ Disappearing Bag is clever and precious.

On the second disc, The Twelve Days of Christmas…and more classic holiday stories, is new to the Scholastic Storybook Treasures collection. It begins with a rousing sing-along version of The Twelve Days of Christmas, adapted from the picture book version by Robert Bloomfield. The DVD includes four more tales: Great Joy, based on the book by Kate DiCamillo and narrated by Jane Curtin; The Clown of God, based on the book by renowned author Tommy dePaola; James Marshall’s zany story, Merry Christmas, Space Case, narrated by Christopher Lloyd; and a Chinese New Year story, Sam and the Lucky Money, based on the book by Karen Chinn. There’s not a title on this DVD that wasn’t liked at our house. From moral-teaching tales to heartwarming offerings to silly antics by past characters of the same author, there’s something for everyone here.

You can purchase this fine 2-DVD set from Scholastic/NewKideo for $19.95. (Remember! Enter the promo code “musereviews” at checkout for 10% off your total purchase!)

Win it! Thanks to Scholastic/NewKideo, one of you will win The Night Before Christmas Special Edition 2-Pack! Just tell me one other title from the Scholastic Storybook Treasures collection that your kids would love (in a comment below).

NOTE: To try our best to get your DVD set to you in time for Christmas, this will be a quick-turnaround contest! The event will end at 11pm EST THIS SUNDAY, December 13, 2009!

Sorry; US entries only. Good luck!
