Retro-chic book for super-imaginative kiddos

When I was a little girl, whenever I’d throw Mom a curve ball and ask her to tell me a story at bedtime instead of read one, she’d always tell a variation of “the bubble story.” It was about a little girl who went to far off and interesting places, carried through the air and across continents by and within a gigantic bubble.
I think that’s why this book, Harry and Horsie by Katie Van Camp, grabbed my attention and affection so very much.
Katie Van Camp worked in New York City as an au pair for a little boy named Harry (who is actually the son of David Letterman). Harry had a favorite stuffed animal named “Horsie,” and the two embark on an imaginative, magical journey in this delightful picture book.
It all starts when Harry, past his set bedtime, sneaks out of bed to grab his brand new “Super Duper Bubble Blooper” and play a while. Things turn more serious, though, when one of the bubbles surrounds his beloved Horsie and carry him into outer space. Harry dons his superhero garb and takes off after his little stuffed friend, coming up on numerous surprises as he speeds along on a toy rocket.
The illustrations charm me, too! Artist Lincoln Agnew combines retro-chic pop-art style with vintage comic book layout and graphic wording. It is super-fun to look though and ingest. The book feels years older than it is. (And the artwork ups the “cool factor” a whole bunch).
Perfect for ages 3-5, this is a perfect pick for bedtime reading. I’m super excited to be able to share this story with my two inquisitive little explorers….especially since my son G is still inseparable from his own “Horsie,” a threadbare, worn-out stuffed frog named Tadbit.
You can purchase Harry and Horsie for $16.99 wherever books are sold or via HarperCollins’ online store.
(Psst! And check out HarryandHorsie.com for fun activities, wallpaper graphics, and other fun stuff!)
Win it! Thanks to HarperCollins, one of you can win a copy of Harry and Horsie for your own little one(s)! Just tell me another HarperCollins title for children that your kids would dig (in a comment below). I’ll close the contest next Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 at 11pm EST. Sorry; US entries only. Good luck!
CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.
Congrats to #15, Madeline, the winner of this book!
