A not-too-scary handful of Halloween favorites.

Just in time for Halloween: Scholastic’s Storybook Treasures Read-Along DVD of A Very Brave Witch…and More Halloween Stories.
There are eight stories on this 70 minute DVD. The stories are not too chilling or intense. Ages 3 to 9 are recommended, though I’d bet that ages 5-8 would enjoy this the most.
Elle Fanning narrates the title story, which describes the wishes of a witch to find out what humans are really like. Surprisingly, she discovers they aren’t quite as scary or strange as she’d thought!
My personal favorite? A Dark, Dark Tale. After the first few words of the story began I instantly remembered hearing it told by my teachers in grade school. We were all hanging onto the edge of our plastic schooldesk seats by the end….when the scary resolution wasn’t all that scary — it was silly!
The funniest story, The Three-Legged Cat, is about Tom, the three-legged (pegged-legged) cat who longs for adventure. He ends up finding it in a round-about way, thanks to a funny mix-up!
By the Light of the Halloween Moon is brilliantly and poetically written, with illustrations that intrigue. All of the stories together have won a combined total of five national awards.
