Halloween for little ones can be a tad bit scary. My two are 3 and 5 and are very sensitive to material that’s even remotely scary, and so when it comes to choosing Halloween books and costumes, my husband and I are extremely careful.
That’s why I’m glad we have the chance to share and enjoy Moonlight: The Halloween Cat this fall season. This Halloween book is harmless — and so much fun to read and experience! Cynthia Rylant is the author of this festive book, the much celebrated author of over 100 other books for children.
If your family or kids love cats, Moonlight will step right into your heart. Moonlight is a jet black cat whose favorite night to explore is Halloween night. She blends right in with the night air, making it easy to walk alongside trick-or-treaters or observe some of nature’s finest nighttime creatures.
The yellow moon, scarecrows, carved pumpkins, and stealthy raccoons are all along Moonlight’s nighttime stroll. While some little animals and children sleep, we get a glimpse into what Moonlight (and other nocturnally slanted creatures) sees and does.
The illustrations by Melissa Sweet seem to pop out of the book. Dark backgrounds allow fall and Halloween-colored objects to jump of the page….rich oranges, deep purples, vibrant yellows. Even the typeset of the story is white, which is a terrific contrast to the darker background surroundings.
Though it’s simple and not filled with danger or spectacular feats, the short descriptive story of Moonlight’s walk through her small hometown is enjoyable and pleasant. Each time I finish reading it to the kids, I found myself wanting to immediately turn back to the beginning and read it again. It brings the warmth and mystique of fall right into storytime. It’s uncluttered, fun, and realistic.
You can bring home Moonlight: The Halloween Cat for $17.99 from your favorite local bookseller or from a host of online stores.
Win it! Courtesy of HarperCollins, I have one extra copy of Moonlight: The Halloween Cat to give away! Just tell me, in a comment below, your favorite part of the autumn season (or Halloween). I’ll close the contest next Tuesday, October 6th, 2009 at 11pm EST. Sorry; US addresses only. Good luck!
CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.
Congratulations to #14, Sandy M, the winner of this book!

I live in Florida, so there is not much change in weather here. Halloween is one of the first signs that winter is coming. The kids can wear their outfits without covering up. SO we can all see their dress-ups.

There are so many things I love about fall….football season, the cold crisp air, Halloween, decorating with ambers, oranges and browns, leaves changing, wearing pretty sweaters, fresh picked apples, fresh apple cider. I think I would have to say my favorite would be enjoying camping in the fall! Thanks for a great giveaway.
