Scribbles
Are you a doodler? Were you one of those kids who constantly drew little cartoons and shapes in your school notebooks? Do your kids love to draw on every piece of paper they come across? Do you have creativity but also love a jumpstart of an idea to get you going?

If you answered “yes” to any of these, then Scribbles: A Really Giant Drawing and Coloring Book by Taro Gomi is a book you need to buy!

When they say “really big,” they’re not joking. Scribbles is over 8″x11″ in size and contains over 350 pages of drawing and coloring inspiration. Think of Scribbles as a “story starter” book for artists instead of authors. Pictures and parts of pictures are scattered throughout its sturdy pages, and a small one or two lines of instructions get you going.

There are realistic pages (such as covering a bare tree with leaves — green or autumnal, your pick) as well as whimsical, fun pages (“This man needs a moustache”). Go in order or flip it open randomly when boredom or inspiration hits….there’s always something fun to draw and color.

The kids immensely enjoy Scribbles. The “scribbles” are bold, simple, and child-friendly enough for them to be able to complete and add to without problem. You can use most any medium you wish, but our top pick is colored pencils.

G came across this page on a day we just happened to be talking about volcanoes, anyway:

This page said to add trees, houses and other pages to a field scene:

And this one? The instructions were simply to color the party hat:

Scribbles: A Really Giant Drawing and Coloring Book is the perfect gift for your kids, a graduate, or yourself! It’s a great “creativity sparking” tool for artists and designers….and a terrific stress relief for those who just need a break from time to time. Scribbles is one of three in this series by Taro Gomi. You can purchase Scribbles directly from Chronicle Books’ website for $19.99 or wherever your favorite books are sold!
