Want to give your children a multi-sensory learning tool to help them get a grasp on the alphabet? Let me tell you about The SENSEsational Alphabet, a book we’ve just recently discovered and love at our house.

My children know their alphabet, but are now learning beginning letter sounds and words that begin with each letter. The SENSEsational Alphabet book is appropriate for all early learning levels, from exploring toddler minds and fingers to older preschoolers who enjoy the task of sitting down with a book and poring over what’s inside.

SENSEsational 1

The SENSEsational Alphabet products were created by husband and wife team, Erik and April Rofe, who, like most of us, cherish and highly regard time spent as a family reading and learning. Their book poured out of their wishes to aid in quality family time and togetherness in other families near and far.

The book’s pages are sturdy and spiral bound, prepared for rapid flipping and extensive exploring by little inquisitive hands! The images on each pages are simple and uncluttered.

SENSEsational 6

The multi-sensory part? Some of the images are scratch-and-sniff, and nearly all are tactile (bumpy, scratchy) or moveable in some form.

In the corner of each page is a diagram of how to sign each word in sign language. My children can follow these diagrams without my help, copying the motions perfectly!

SENSEsational 5

On the right side of the protruding back cover is an electronic board with letter sounds (and the corresponding words) voiced at the push of a button.

SENSEsational 4

Also on each page (and each sound clip button) is Braille for each of the 26 letters, and the last two pages hold an exhaustive list of all alphabet letters in both Braille and sign language. (This couldn’t have come at a better time! Our homeschooling unit last week focused on light and seeing. We discussed people who are blind and how they use Braille to read. What a way to expand a learning topic!)

Another product put out by The SENSEsational Alphabet is a set of Touch and Feel Cards. This is an extra-portable way to teach the alphabet and corresponding words in flash card format. These cards also boast some of the tactile and sniff-able extras that the book contains!

SENSEsational 3
(Here’s Rainey demonstrating how to sign “ball” with the aid of the Touch and Feel Cards.)

Win it! Thanks to the Rofes, I have another The SENSEsational Alphabet book AND Touch and Feel Cards to send to one of you! Just head over to The SENSEsational Alphabet’s site, look around, then tell me in a comment something you learned or found particularly interesting. I’ll close this contest at 11pm EST next Tuesday, September 15th, 2009. Sorry; US entries only. Good luck!

CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED.

Congratulations to #32, Laura, the winner of the book and flash card gift set!

I absolutely love The SENSEsational Alphabet! I have 4 children and 2 grandchildren and we have spent countless hours reading together. My 3 year old grandson and I spend many hours at bookstores scouring the shelves for new and exciting books to read. This book is “one of a kind” and my grandson was drawn to it immediately due to its many exciting and educational features.

So many senses are involved in learning. It is great how this book incorporates so many of them at once. A great learning tool for kids.
