If you ever watch Nick Jr. with your kids, you’ve most likely heard of Hot Peas ‘n Butter or seen one of their music videos. My kids love them! Hot Peas ‘n Butter is made up of nationally acclaimed musical artists Daniel Lapidus and Francisco Cotto, based out of New York City. The lead singer’s smooth and easygoing voice is pleasing to listen to — no harshness or grating sounds here.

Like many music groups focused on kids today, Hot Peas ‘n Butter heavily emphasizes an appreciation for global music and culture. On their new album, Best of the Bowl (Volume 5), Spanish and English harmonize well together. Latin, Caribbean, and even African-inspired beats cohabitate on this fun album. Distinct Cuban and Puerto Rican sounds are here…merengue, salsa, etc.

Our favorite song is “Baila,” a hyped-up, very dance-able tune that we play again and again. “Somos Familia” teaches kids the Spanish words for the different members of one’s family. (You can watch the music video of this song here!) “Que Bonita Bandera” (“What a Beautiful Flag” celebrates all flags and nationalities in a singable, friendly tone.

I think this is fast becoming one of my favorite albums in our kid-CD rotation. I joke with my husband that there’s absolutely no way that you can be in a bad mood while listening to this album. Hot Peas ‘n Butter brightens my day — and livens up the kids’ days, as well — with its danceable, rhythmic tributes and celebrations of countries and cultures.
