Just out, from Putumayo Kids’ award winning “Playground” series, is a new CD all about food and eating around the world. Picnic Playground is an international, musical delight all about edible delights (of all kinds)!

This CD is a picnic basketful of tunes from all countries and cultures. Talented artists from Denmark, Cuba, South Africa, Germany, France, and many more come together in this project, all celebrating a common thing: Healthy food.

“Eat Like a Rainbow” by Jan Mankita (whose voice and style is somewhat similar to that of the folksy, laid back Jack Johnson) is all about choosing foods that spread over the spectrum. My kids love the remake of the 40s song “Shoo Fly Pie,” performed Johnny Bregar. It’s a jazzy, snap-worthy celebration of some of our country’s finest sweet fare.

My favorite? The song “Pomodoro,” which is essentially an ode or a love song to the tomato, the red gem of summer.

When Pascal Parisot croons, you’ll feel like you’re sitting and dining at a sidewalk cafe in Paris. And if Donikkl’s song about a boy bringing a cow to school just because he adores milk (“milch”) so much doesn’t make you laugh….

The CD liner is a colorful leaflet/book that tells the story behind each song, with English, French, and Spanish translations. In the back are tips on how to “eat like a rainbow.” And 1% of the sale of each Picnic Playground album will go to Vitamin Angels, an agency that makes sure that underprivileged children receive the vitamins they need for growth and wellness.

All this month are a hosts of Picnic Playground events/concerts around the nation! Check their events page to see if one’s coming near you. AND!
