Tracey Singer’s “Sweets ‘n’ Treats”: Review & Giveaway

Brand new this month is a fun & funky CD release by singer/songwriter Tracey Singer. (What a name for this profession, huh?) The CD, “Sweets ‘n’ Treats,” is full of just that. There are sweet, gentle, rolling lullabies and also some rib-tickling treats, songs that will make your kids giggle galore.

Singer calls his new album “a fun and funny musical adventure,” noting, “I get a kick out of two things: Helping kids to see the humor and downright silliness in life at a tender age and, most of all, making them laugh.”

My kids did giggle at a few of these tunes, especially “Nana Nana Boo Boo.” “Did he just say ‘nana nana BOO BOO?” my oldest exclaimed the first time through, scrunching up his nose and grinning. The song leads you to believe that “Hard-Hearted Haley” will change her nasty attitude and learn the art of kindess, but a surprise ending is in store. This song actually led to a little “life lesson” talk when it was through.

A few of the songs may not be terribly interesting and funny to younger children. A couple of them went right over my 3-year-old and almost-5-year-old’s heads, in fact. Yet I believe Singer’s theory is that of Sesame Street’s and many other childrens’ media of late: Throw some upper-level (yet still clean) humor and sly jokes in there and you have the parents hooked, too. Pretty clever.

The songs range as broadly in musical style as they do in topic. No two songs are alike, and every one carries a different feeling. Backup singers bop their heads in every now and again. Buck Howdy is one, who’s also the CD’s producer. A kids’ chorus also joins in during some parts, as well. Whether you like folk, country, 50s doo-wop, or guitar-laden lullabies, this album has it all.

You can buy Tracey Singer’s “Sweets ‘n’ Treats” CD for $15 at his website, as well as via Amazon, CDBaby, and iTunes.

Our favorite is Stinky Smoke because my 3-year-old currently looooves saying things are stinky, so he was thrilled to hear the word in a song. :)
