Mary Kaye Music : New CD review…and giveaway!

She’s been likened to and called “the Natalie Merchant of kids’ music.” Mary Kaye of Mary Kaye Music embodies the carefree, fun-loving spirit of childhood in her voice and in her music.

Within seconds, her acoustic-driven folk sounds send you swaying and coax a smile. This unconventional kids’ music is full of imagination-enhancing lyrics that beg to be listened to in detail. It’s not long before your mind’s eye is visualizing everything that her multi-octave-spanning voice croons.

You may have heard of or seen her previous album, Spin Your Web. (You can listen to samples here at CD Baby.) What you may not know is that Mary Kaye is debuting a brand new album on July 2nd: Music Box.

We were lucky enough to receive a pre-release copy of Music Box to enjoy and review on Muse Reviews! The entire album is upbeat and positive. The lyrics are positively evocative! Listening to “Bug” makes a smile creep across our faces as we listen to the mayhem that ensues when a creepy critter is found in the house. “Robbie the Robot” is one of our favorites, seeing as robots are big in our house right now. The acoustic rhythms are punctuated by Mary Kaye’s lyrical “bleeps” as well as retro-sounding blips and beeps from synths and keyboards.

My favorite tune is “Hot Chocolate Fairy,” a magical way of looking at what happens when a seemingly ordinary wintertime drink is esteemed to something more fantastical. The album rounds out with “Sleepy Land,” a whispery tune that tells all about animals settling down as the sun retreats.

Music Box, remember, hits the shelves on July 2nd, 2009 and will sell for $15 on CD Baby and Amazon. Mark your calendars!

Win it! Thanks to Mary Kaye Music, I am able to give away TWO Music Box albums! All you need to do to enter the contest is one of these two options:

1) Run over to Mary Kaye’s website and look around; come back and tell me in a comment something that interested you or that you found notable.

2) Go over to CD Baby and listen to clips from her previous album, Spin Your Web. Tell me, in a comment, your favorite song.

I’ll close the contest next Wednesday, June 24th, 2009 at 11pm EST. Sorry; US entries only. Good luck!

I learned that Mary has worked as an actress and an elementary school teacher.

I posted a comment yesterday but I’m not sure if it went through. I liked her songs “porcupine path” and “blueberry dreams” thanks for the chance!

She’s on the radio Saint George Utah!

We are in Utah too!

Music has been so very important to Parker. It has played a great role in his development.

I liked the website. It was simple childlike navigation. I learned she was an elementary school teacher.

I learned that this will be Mary Kaye’s 4th album.

Are we allowed to do both entries? If so, my favorite song was Blueberry Dreams. If not, sorry I don’t follow directions very well :)

I went to her website and found she lives in Maine with her husband and two daughters.

I started listening to the songs from Spin Your Web and my 2-year-old started grooving to them! Our favorite is Pig Party, it’s so upbeat. Thanks!

Porcupine Path is my favorite from Spin Your Web, I like the beat. Thanks.

i like the The Skeleton Song :)

I find it great that a third grade class contributed back up vocals for three of the songs. It’s awesome that she had children participate on her album! Thanks!

I like Blueberry Dreams. We just got a flat of organic blueberries that we are having such a great feast on! This song is very appropriate for us! Thanks!
