Learning about eating well

A winning book by one of my favorite juvenile book authors/illustrators, Lizzy Rockwell, is Good Enough to Eat, a kid-sized guide to food and nutrition.

For any inquisitive child who asks where food goes after it’s swallowed, or for any of you parents who seek to give your kids detailed knowledge about healthy food choices and responsible eating, this book is top notch.

As if the delightful, summery & fresh illustrations of foods (and wide-eyed, happy children) weren’t enough, Good Enough to Eat boasts easy-to-digest technical information for little minds, such as the definition of a calorie, a play-by-play explanation of digestion, why protein is so important, and what vitamins do.

Since our son is uber-fascinated with all things “process related,” this book is right up his alley. Any book that provides an in-depth explanation and discussion about the wondrous way our bodies take in, use, gain energy from, and process food gets his vote. The little speech bubbles are cute, too, providing entertaining snippets of extra nutrition-based info out of the mouths of the adorable hand-drawn girls and boys on each page.

AND! There are five super-yummy recipes in the back which cover all five food groups quite graciously. We are going to try the Yogi Pops (made with yogurt, strawberries, bananas, and pineapple juice) as soon as we can!

Good Enough to Eat would be a fantastic addition to any child’s library, or even a superior book on basic nutrition for those of you who are homeschooling. This large, hardcover book retails for $17.99 and can be purchased at a number of favorite online stores, as well as most bookstores near you!

Win it! Thanks to HarperCollins, one of you can win your own copy of this delightful book, Good Enough to Eat! Simply head over to HarperCollins and look at their expansive line of children’s titles. Tell me in one comment another title that you know your children would enjoy. I’ll close the contest next Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 at 11pm EST. Sorry; US entries only. Good luck!
