Sprinkles Cupcakes Mixes — Review & Giveaway

If you live near a metro area, you’ve probably heard of Sprinkles Cupcakes (or even visited one of their retail locations). Their super sleek shops sell some of the most scrumptious cupcakes on earth, available in over 20 yummy flavors that change daily.

Candace Nelson, the owner of Sprinkles Cupcakes, was inspired by her great-grandmother’s achievements, a restaurant owner and pastry chef in her time. Her dream is that their cupcakes will “conjure up lovely memories of your own childhood or family, or simply the pleasure of good taste.” I can vouch for the good taste — the quality of their cupcakes are unparalleled, and it’s obvious that only the finest ingredients are worthy of being involved.

And this week, this cute, cylindrical wrapped package arrived on my doorstep:

Sprinkles packaging

What you may not know is that Sprinkles Cupcakes also makes and ships cupcake mixes. I received the lemon mix to review. I couldn’t help but to squeal at the precious packaging. It was too cute to open. (Well, almost.)

A bit of mixing…

…and they were ready for baking. It was all I could do not to go ahead and eat the batter…as is.

Pre-baked Sprinkles cupcakes

The cupcakes began to fill our home with the lemony smell I anticipated. Rich. Decadent. Clean. The smell of summer. They puffed up so nicely and were golden just around the edges….just right. The kids ran through and asked every few minutes as they were cooling. Not yet, I said!

After dinner, I whipped up the easy frosting recipe included in the canister. We let the kids frost them, complete with the signature Sprinkles Cupcake modern dot decorations for the tops.

Icing

MMMmmmm!

R eating Sprinkles

The lemon-buttercream icing recipe made a gracious plenty, and so these beauties had towering piles of frosting that would weaken any knees.

We invited over some friends, an impromptu “cupcake test panel,” to get some outside reactions.

Taste testers

Ben tasted it first. He likened the flavor to that of angel food cake, light and clean. He was surprised that the icing was only buttercream, since it was as creamy and thick as cream cheese. Two thumbs up from Ben!

Amanda commented about how sturdy and substantial the cake was, heavy enough to be able to handle the mound of frosting on top. “I don’t feel like I’m eating a cupcake….it’s like a ‘real piece of cake.’”

Amanda

Me? I kept thinking of how decadent it tasted as I ate it…and it got me giddy since it reminded me a lot of the taste and texture of wedding cake (one of my favorite things on the face of this earth). They are rich and indulgent. One will surely satisfy. The lemon flavor? Oh-so-amazing. I can only imagine that each one of their other flavors are equally as amazing. I would love to try them all!

You can buy these mixes (or their made-fresh-daily cupcakes) at every Sprinkles Cupcakes retail location. You can also order the mixes online directly from Sprinkles.

Win it! Thanks to Sprinkles Cupcakes, I have another Sprinkles Cupcake Mix in Lemon to give away! All you have to do to enter is run over to Sprinkles Cupcakes and look around. Come back and tell me, in one comment, another gift or apparel item they carry that caught your eye, or a flavor you would try first if you had your pick! I’ll close the contest at 11pm EST next Friday, May 22nd, 2009 at 11pm EST. Sorry; US entries only. Good luck!
