Things Good Mothers Know

Noted author, interior decorator, and speaker Alexandra Stoddard has debuted a new book in time for Mother’s Day: Things Good Mothers Know.

I first became familiar with Stoddard when I pored over several of her books about decorating, including Creating a Beautiful Home. She’s graceful, elegant, wise, and poised, and all of those traits are reflected in her writing.

In Things Good Mothers Know, a variety of topics are discussed and expounded upon, including simplicity, needs vs. wants, clutter, character, and home — all of the things that inhabit the heart of every mother’s day. She inspires, challenges, and causes you to think. She celebrates the joys of motherhood and offers consolation of sorts for the trying tasks that are normal and inevitable.

I especially devoured and enjoyed chapter 4, where she helps redefine perfectionism. It is a call to let go of the details, a plea to embrace excellence and “the now” instead of perfection and prudence every second of the day.

There were a select number of parts which did make me raise an eyebrow and things I didn’t adhere to or necessarily believe in, but overall, it was a fantastic, interesting read. It is a welcome and heartfelt addition to Stoddard’s expansive line of past works. It would be a very nice gift for a mom or a grandmother, a sister or a friend.

Win it! Courtesy of HarperCollins, I am able to offer a copy of Alexandra Stoddard’s Things Good Mothers Know to one of you. Simply visit HarperCollins and look around, then tell me in a comment another one of their titles which look interesting. (You can browse just the new releases or all of their available titles.) I’ll close the contest next Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 at 11pm EST. Sorry; US entries only. Good luck!

I have read most of Alexandra Stoddards other books. I have enjoyed them all and found them inspiring.
One of the many books that look interesting on the Harper Collins site is the one by Robyn Moreno — Practically Posh.
