A dissatisfied penguin.

In our preschooling-at-home, we’ve been talking about penguins. There is enough fascinating information about these little feather-coated guys to fill up an entire week with lessons, books, and activities. One of the kids’ favorite stories in the bunch, by far, is A Penguin Story by Antoinette Portis. This author has long since been one of our family’s favorites after her notable Not a Box.

The story follows a little penguin named Edna who grows tired of the only colors she sees every day: Black, white, and blue. She sets off on a trek to find a new feast of color for her little eyes and to add a little pizazz to her and her friends’ surroundings. “‘There is blue sea for hunting fish. But there must be something else,’” she says.

The illustrations are kitchy, chalky images on very uncomplicated backgrounds. Vivid and eye-catching still, however, for little curious eyes who become absorbed in the story.
