When the (*ant*) goes marching in…

Ever heard of Uncle Milton Toys? They put out some of the coolest, most eclectic toys on the planet. Their newest line is a selection of toys inspired by the Indiana Jones movies. I knew right away which one of these terrific toys my little guy would gravitate to: The giant, life-life RC Ant . Already a big fan of remote-control toys, G was enthralled with a BUG version — SO much cooler than cars!

He barely let me get in the door with the box before he began to try and open it. The first plus for this toy? EASY-to-open packaging. The ant practically fell out into my hands within 2 minutes. This is a big, big plus if you have a little curious sport running laps and peering over your shoulder, anxious to play!

I set it down at my feet. Yikes. Realistic look and feel? So right they were. I had to count its legs to ensure there were six — it looked like some of the spiders my dad told tales of after his trip to Central America years ago. This thing was BIG. For an ant, that is.

Ant 1

G held onto the “crystal skull” remote. He pressed in the button eyes and it sprung to life. It rolled forward, twisting and turning ever so slightly, backing up on command. Its legs wriggled and its jaws chomped as it went. It was freakishly real….and G was loving it!

Ant 2

Ant 3

It was entertaining him to no end — and making me a little squeamish and skiddish — which means it fulfilled its purpose as a toy of this nature!

Suddenly, one of our two cats appeared. She was not so amused. Her hair stood on end and she slithered past it, eyes wide. How’s that for compounded entertainment?

Ant 4

G’s little sister later woke up from her nap and found this creepy crawler running around the kitchen….and let’s just say her reaction was similar to our cat’s. Thanksgiving day, I heard squeals erupted from the playroom — G had set the ant on course towards his two cousins. So, unless you have a bug-loving tomboy, I’d say that most girls wouldn’t take to this toy as well.

Here’s my take on this toy:

The Good
- It has been a few weeks since this ant came crawling in, and it has been played with a LOT. The small requirement battery-wise is worth it money-wise. It takes a lot to wear this little guy down, I suppose.
- It is quiet. I get tired of super-loud, mechanical-sounding toys that drown out everything else and make it impossible to carry on a conversation in the same room. This ant is pleasingly different in that respect. You can actually hear the “clicking” sounds as it scurries.
- It is durable. The kids have played with it enough that the remote’s antenna has become slightly bent/awry, yet it still works perfectly.

The Not-So-Good
- Only one con: This ant works best on smooth, flat surfaces. It can’t handle carpet that well.

Ant 5

Over all, it’s a fun and interesting toy. Though the recommended age is 6 and up, our 4-year-old manages it with ease. It’s a toy I’m glad we have — even though I still have to do a double-take when I see it scamper across my kitchen floor. *grin*

Win it! Uncle Milton Toys has so graciously offered to offer FIVE of you an Indiana Jones Giant RC Ant of your own!  All you need to do is this:  Go over to Uncle Milton’s site and browse around at their other toy offerings.  Come back here and tell me, in one comment (no commenting twice — that will disqualify you), one other toy that you think your kids would enjoy most.  U.S. entries only.  I’ll close the contest at 11pm on Tuesday, December 9th and announce the winners the following day.  Good luck!

The Shadow Magic– Light Blaster and Glow Screen thing is really neat!

We loved Uncle’s ant farm – but I was clueless to all their fun toys! Wow – which ONE to choose? I think Mr. Intensity would like them all. Currently he’s into dinos – but I think the solar powered car/toys would be uber cool since we live in the valley of the sun. Probably the boa would be in the running, too. Do I have to pick just one? He would totally LOVE this ant, too.

We have wood floors so Mr. Ant will work perfectly for us!

Well, when I was a kid, I had an ant farm. But now I see that they have a Illuminated Ant Farm Gel Colony. WoW! That has to be the winner of all ant farms. Ok, maybe I would enjoy it more than my daughters. Thanks for the giveaway.

My son would love the Indiana Jones Booby Trap Set. That definitely looks like his kind of toy. And, yes, he would go for that ant, too!
