I have been writing ever since I could grasp a pencil. By the time I was six, I was penning humorous poetry books to share with relatives, hoping they’d laugh along with me. When I was eight to twelve, I began writing my own illustrated stories. By the time I was thirteen, I had progressed to novellas. Now, I’m not saying any of this writing is any good. The focus today is on the writing medium, not the writing ability I hold.
For some reason, I was a very practical kid. I didn’t even give a fleeting thought to buying books that were blank — I began with simple white paper (sometimes dot-matrix computer paper with the holed strips torn off the sides), a few folds, and a stapler. Occasionally I’d get fancy and attach a construction paper book cover. These little stapled leaflets made completely suitable volumes for my writing — and write I did.
If only I had known about Bare Books back then. I think every bit of my saved allowance would have gone toward items from this company. Their name is self-explanatory: Bare Books focuses on and specializes in just that: blank books. Books of all kinds, shapes, and sizes, stark white and ready for words and illustrations, paper collaging or scrapbooking, photo attaching or painting. The possibilities are truly endless.
I received a nice selection of samples from Bare Books so that I could get an idea of the wide plethora of choices they offer. I was actually dumbfounded to see what options were available, as well as what incredible construction and durability the books offer, as well. These are as well put together as any book off of a publisher’s shelf. The best part is — the publisher is you. (Or your kids.) Does this make anybody else but me a little bit giddy?
Teachers, moms, art instructors, freelance writers: Just look at all of the options you have at Bare Books:
- Original bare books (hardbound)
- Puzzles
- and extraordinary gift packs! Wouldn’t these make great gifts for the creative kids you know?
Told you that you’d be surprised — if not by the selection, then by the incredible price points. And a flat-rate shipping of $3? Unbelieable.
Dad and I are writing a book together this year. I have been working up some plot scenarios, and when I decide on one, he will be the illustrator (he is a book illustrator by profession). When he and I sat down recently to plan our next few steps in the process, he was quite impressed by Bare Books and the possibilities they help to create. He agreed with me that news about this wonderful company should be shared with the world — and fast.
Several of their books are going to be great as the kids grow and learn to write and illustrate stories themselves. I am putting a couple of them away to pull out in a year or two so their imaginations can fill the pages!
I wish I’d known about Bare Books five years ago — but I am so glad to know about them now!

at some point in junior high I came across a similar book in a book store, bought it and loved it. It felt so “real” and “official” – haven’t thought about it in years, but this post brought it right back! Enjoy!
