40 years of Sesame Street

Sesame Street has been a part of my life since I can remember.
I have memories of watching it as a young preschooler. At the time, it came on at 4pm, which meant that, for Mom, it fit quite well into the preschool and nap routine.
I watched it again when my little sister, Emily, became a fan. I am nearly eight years older than she, but that didn’t mean I didn’t enjoy a little Sesame on school holidays or during the summer!
We loved watching it with my Grandpa whenever we were down to visit. He would jokingly call it “SEE-saym” Street.
I watched it with kids I babysat. And of course, as soon as G could sit in my lap and focus on something, I sat down in front of the TV once or twice a week and watched it with him. Though it’s certainly changed (a LOT) since I was a kid, hasn’t everything?
There were segments that I missed seeing, characters that had long ago left the show (I remember when Mr. Hooper died!), and new characters I’d never heard of. Yet beneath the surface stuff, it was still Sesame Street, the old familiar friend, the constant and quality show for preschoolers that has most definitely stood the test of time.
Tomorrow’s premiere of the newest season heralds First Lady Michelle Obama, who will talk about planting gardens and eating healthy foods. We’ll be watching and recording the anniversary episode. Will you?
What do you like/dislike about Sesame Street?
What is the part/character/sketch that you miss seeing the most?
What (or who) do you wish would come back?
And what (or who) do you think should move OFF of Sesame Street? :)
