Making my home a haven….with flowers and light.

One of my most important tools I use in making our home a haven is light. Soft, romantic light, not overbearing (overhead) light make faces less shadowy, edges less sharp, and colors more rich. On overcast days and as soon as the sun begins setting, all lamps go on. The lamp light paired with the warm & jewel tones throughout our house makes for a serene evening retreat. Suddenly a living room becomes a cozy corner for reading….the kitchen invites you in to make a nighttime cup of tea….and even the bathroom has a slight, tranquil glow for face washing and such, so as to not wake up too much before trying to go to sleep.

Of course, overhead lights are on all the ceiling fans in the upstairs bedrooms — they come in handy at least once a week when a stuffed bedtime buddy or tiny Lego piece goes missing.

And now? Flowers. Of course, though it has been said to be a interior decorator’s faux-pas, I have silk flowers (orchids mainly) scattered here and there for “the look” without the green thumb requirements.

Yet I cherish and uphold the importance of fresh flowers. Flowers bring such beauty, freshness, airyness, and joy to a room! They don’t need to be costly….or bunched together, crowded together in a fat vase in a Hollywood dressing room-style arrangement. (Although….don’t you enjoy watching old movies where there’s always a huge, circular table in the center of the entry foyer, a vase bursting with roses in its center? Sigh.)

It can be as simple and as solitary as a rose, placed just right on a table.

Or for a little girl’s tea party or special celebration for a mom or grandmom, something delicate and sweet!

And of course, some of the sweetest flowers on earth are those crafted by tiny little hands…
