Have you heard of Flat Stanley?
It’s a character from a book by Jeff Smith….a little boy who’s, well, flat. It seems rather cool at first, but soon he begins to wish he could be like everyone else. It’s a book that we’ve read time and again.
My mother-in-law, a former kindergarten teacher, turned this story into a mini theme unit by helping the kids create their own “Flat Gardner” and “Flat Rainey.” They each decorated their “flat selves,” then the paper pieces were laminated, folded up, put into an envelope, and sent on their way.
So far, Flat G & R have visited the homes and lives of three of our family members. They’ve just returned from a journey to our 2nd cousins’ house, and they’re preparing themselves for another trip any day now.
G receives emails after each journey, complete with stories of what all Flat Gardner and Flat Rainey have been up to, complete with photos. The kids are all giggles and smiles when they see their “little flat friends” showing up in so many interesting and unlikely places!
