Finding new things to read.

This summer, we’ve gone back to some of our old favorites book-wise. Some of the books we’ve read are repeats….others are books that have sat unnoticed for months (or years) but that we’ve finally taken down to open. For instance, G and I are currently reading through the first in the classic Bobbsey Twins series. I found the first four volumes on the bargain bin at my local bookstore a couple of years ago. It’s easy to see that mysteries is going to be one of G’s favorite genres.

Though our shelves are full of books of all kinds, we’re never satisfied with the tales within reach. We’re always looking for more adventures within the pages of books, and the library is one of our favorite venues for finding new treasures. Of course, some books stick out more than others, tales which beg to be bought from a store or ordered online to be taken home permanently. Here are a few of the books and/or authors that we are wanting to read (or read more of) the rest of the summer and on into fall:

My First Little House Books series (based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s classics) – I spent my junior high years devouring the unabridged versions….how neat that you can introduce snippets of her stories to younger children!

Bill Peet books – This author is one I vaguely remember as a child…but I had a friend recommend his books for our inquisitive G, and we’ll definitely be checking them out.

Sven Nordqvist books – More recommendations came in for this author, as well. I must say his books do look intriguing…and timeless.

Barbara Lehman books – I’ve heard that Lehman has a way *without* words. Some of our favorite books are wordless, coaxing the kids into creating their own versions and opinions about what’s going on in the story.

Joy Cowley’s Wishy-Washy series – I know kindergarten teachers use Cowley’s funny stories about the Wishy-Washies to aid in their teaching. I have a feeling that G will appreciate the topics included, such as cleaning machines, for one, since he’s all about cleaning right now.

The Milly-Molly-Mandy series by Joyce Lankester Brisley – First published in 1928, it’s supposedly so simple but enthralling none the least. I know it’s big on the FIAR reading list. I think my little book-loving girl would really take to it. Now, if I can just find a copy….

What are your kids currently reading & enjoying? What new books or authors will you explore in the new school year?

We are loving Audrey Wood books right now – especially Silly Sally! Thinking R would enjoy that one too.
