Completion art

This week for school, G asked if we could just “do art.” Ever since we set up his art desk, that kid has been furiously drawing, scribbling, painting, and sketching away the hours of each day. It’s wonderful! Why, sure, we can do just art! So we’ve been having fun doing structured AND unstructured art activities all week long….and we may stretch it into next week, too.

A while back, I bookmarked a neat idea I saw on Heart of the Matter: Using magazine clippings as art starters. One afternoon this week, I had a stack of 1/2 sheets with pasted magazine pictures on them, sitting on G’s desk for him to find. It’s funny how his little mind thinks. He can work his favorite object in the world, vacuum cleaners, into every and any context — here is his completed picture of a clipped magazine cat, seemingly about to be sucked up by a vacuum’s hose.

A fun little Lowly the Worm book cut out from Richard Scarry’s Best Make-It Book Ever (my vintage bookstore copy) provided lots more fun completion exercises.

I am just itching to get him the Doodles and Scribbles books by Taro Gomi. With all this interest, I have a good excuse to buy them!
