This weekend, it rained for three days straight, so I pulled out all the stops when it comes to thinking up crafts and activities we could happily do indoors. This particular activity was one my mom did with me as a kid. It’s really fun, a great art project AND science project rolled into one…..just be sure you provide total adult supervision the entire time.
I also think this would make a fabulous “rainbow themed” activity for today, St. Patrick’s Day!
You start with crayons, some bottles and/or jars, and a lit candle.
1. Peel the paper completely from the crayons.

2. Working with one crayon at a time, barely let the tip touch the candle flame, just until the crayon tip begins to melt.

3. Quickly but carefully, use the crayon tip to make one or two “dots” on a waiting jar or glass bottle.

4. Fill up the entire surface area with dots if you like. Or make pictures or designs with dots (pointilism). OR just haphazardly decorate the bottle with dots, not bothering to cover. This is the open-ended part!

5. The tall glass bottles are great flower vases. Jars make excellent pen cups or votive candle holders!
