The Day It Rained Hearts!

Today marked our first official day using a literature-based approach to preschool at home. To celebrate the week preceeding Valentine’s Day, I chose The Day It Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond. What a sweet story! The kids loved the book, as well as what they inferred from the pictures. (I loved that they had to infer things based on the illustrations.)

We talked about how the heart shape is a big part of Valentine’s Day.  They watched as I cut out teardrop shapes from folded paper. When I handed them the shapes and told them to unfold them, their eyes widened. “It’s a HEART!” They pasted the paper hearts onto a collage as I continued to manufacture them. We threw in a doily or two for extra pizazz. G glued down one side only of a couple of the hearts….”to make them pop up like in a book,” he explained.

Pulling up a mini math lesson, I showed them that the folded line on each paper heart divided it in half….the line of symmetry. I then handed them each a half heart and asked them to figure out how to use a mirror to complete the heart. It didn’t take them long to do it! The looks on their faces was priceless — they were astounded.

Just as a fun little add-on, we created torn paper suncatchers with clear contact paper. We used Valentine colors, of course….and the sun shines through beautifully….although it’s apparent I need to practice my techniques in working with contact paper….I had to apologize to G for wrinkling his artwork!

What a fun day! I’m so glad to hear that the literature-based approach is working out for all three of you :)
