We pulled this activity out today — we didn’t get to it last week because I had a hard time tracking down Brach’s mellowcreme pumpkins. (It had to be Brach’s. No other brand will suffice.)
We threw 12 green paper pumpkin leaves on the table, then gave the children each a dice to roll. We played several variations on a math theme:
- Whatever number showed, they had to put that number of pumpkins on the matching numbered pumpkin leaf (this was mainly for R)
- G did simple addition, using two pre-picked numbers and the pumpkins for counting pieces
- G also tried his hand at subtraction for the first time — his eyes lit up as he began to understand the concept!
The kids were so funny — they didn’t try to eat them — it was if they weren’t entirely sure they were edible — they looked so real! G kept sniffing them and saying, “Mmm! They smell good!”
After they were growing tired of sums and subtracting, they were allowed to roll the dice once and eat that many mellowcreme pumpkins. They rolled a small number — thank goodness — if it had been a large one, we would’ve introduced the concept of division today, as well! *grin*
