Pumpkin Math

We had plans for what we toted home from the pumpkin patch yesterday evening — two medium-sized pumpkins and two small “spookies.”

G had a fun math & science lesson today. He was amused at how we could learn math with nothing but pumpkins and a few other tools (a measuring tape, a scale, etc.).

We measured each pumpkin around the middle (G learned what “circumference” means), as well as how tall and wide each one was.

The most fun part was weighing them.

We lined them up under their stats, and then G later rearranged them according to size and weight.

We cut open the smallest pumpkin….but before we did, we made a guess as to how many seeds were inside. We were way off….I had no idea such a small pumpkin could house that many seeds.

After R woke up from her nap, she used the now-roasted pumpkin seeds in a counting mat activity.

I forgot and cut up that small pumpkin before we were able to do one last experiment: Do pumpkins sink or float? Oh, well. Next year.

What a fun way to do math. I especially like using the seeds for on the counting mat. Weren’t the seeds greasy, though?

Meg, you never cease to amaze me at the learning activities you plan for Gardner and Rainey!
