Bloggy Giveaways Quarterly Carnival!
It’s that time once again! Thanks for stopping by!
So…..welcome! Kick up your feet and relax a while. I hope you’ll browse around a while and like what you read & see. (And don’t forget to hop over to my reviews blog, Muse Reviews, for another fantastic giveaway!)
I am giving away “a few of my favorite things” this time around. I wanted to give away something specifically for the ladies, too, since we all spend so much time and money on our kids already. (Right?)
Here’s the little gift ensemble I’ve put together for one lucky winner:
- Samara O’shea’s book Note To Self, an excellent commentary/how-to on journaling your life
- A hardbound, gold-gilded lined blank journal for your writing pursuits or fleeting thoughts
- A selection of teas and chocolate (of course, right?)
- Another surprise or two, perhaps! (You’ll have to wait and see.)
All you have to do is, in a comment, tell me the most thoughtful or creative gift you’ve ever given OR received. In a world of pre-wrapped gifts available for immediate purchase and delivery, it’s nice to hear about gifts that truly come from the heart, especially with the holiday season right around the corner. (One comment per person, please, and U.S. entries only!)
I’ll close the contest this Saturday night (Nov. 1, 2008) at 11pm EST and contact the winner the next day. Good luck!
Thanks for dropping in! Don’t forget to enter some (or all) of the other great contests at Bloggy Giveaways!

>>>One of mine and my husband’s goals in marriage is to visit all 50 states together. He loves all things maps… so for our first Christmas I bought a map (50 inch) and had it matted on foam board and then framed, but without the glass. Then I bought push pin flags…and to every place we go…we put a flag in the map of the United States! It’s our favorite thing to come home from a trip…and first thing…he wants to go to the map (in our sitting room in the master bedroom) and put the flags!

One of my most favorite and thoughtful gifts that i’ve ever given was when I created a beautiful scrapbook for my FIL to keep with him when he travels. He drives a truck and in the book were pictures of all of the grandkids and special moments our family has shared. I truly enjoyed making it and I know he enjoyed recieving it!

This is probably not what most would consider thoughtful and personal, but I love getting gift cards from bookstores. One Christmas my mom gave me a $50 Barnes and Noble card. Spending all that time in the bookstore picking out my books was bliss!

This year my birthday happened to be on the same day Hurricane Ike hit our town in the Houston area. Needless to say, we didn’t celebrate much. :) One week later, though, a good friend of mine showed up on my doorstep with 2 large bags of mystery items. She knew that I had a goal to learn how to make freezer jam, so she brought over every single item necessary – right down to the bowls and spoons (she didn’t want me doing dishes!) – and took her time to teach me how to make freezer jam. It was her birthday gift to me. Not only did I appreciate that she hadn’t let my birthday pass by unobserved, but she gave me an extraordinary gift: a knew skill. How awesome is that?

Right after my first son was born my then boss came to vist us in the hospital and brought a beautiful plant to brighten my hospital room, a couple of magazines for me to read while baby slept and 2 small containers of icecream for my husband and I enjoy that evening in celebration of our new addition.

One of the most thoughtful gifts I’ve been given was my mother-in-law’s sewing machine. It was much nicer than mine, and she gave it to me because I sew and she doesn’t. While it is an expensive machine, I love it in part just because she was nice enough to give it to me and she didn’t have to.

For Mother’s Day several years ago, my husband surprised me with tickets to see Mikhail Baryshnikov; in an intimate setting of just him and a piano. It is, by far, the best material gift I have received for several reasons. 1. I knew that as Misha got older, the chances of me seeing him dance in person were slim; 2. We couldn’t really afford the tickets; and 3. My husband planned and plotted and got my mom involved so I had no idea they were coming. His reasoning was that it was something you only get to do once and that the financial sacrifice was worth it. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

the most creative gift i’ve ever received was from my younger sister. She was about 10 at the time. When she was much younger she had broken one of my favorite horse figures–just a plastic pony my granny had given me before she had moved to Ireland.
I didn’t know it, but she had kept the pony and decided to fix her for me. She repainted her, used clay to mold a new leg, butchered a couple of her barbies (she had 200 at that time) for their hair to make a new main…
presented her to me. Best gift I had ever received.

What an awesome giveaway!! The most thoughtful gift I’ve ever given was to make a bunch of little cards telling my mother everything I was thankful to her for. I laminated them and put them on a ring where she could easily flip through them, but she keeps them out on her kitchen counter to this day. I probably did 100+.

My husband and I have never really had much money. For our anniversary one year he was sad because he didn’t have any money to get me anything “really wonderful” (as he put it). I told him that was fine. Helping me around the house was gift enough for me. But he said he really wanted to give me something so I told him to write me a poem. Well… he took it one step further. He wrote me a wonderful poem AND had it printed on a sweatshirt for me to wear. It’s been 10+ years and I still have the sweatshirt and wear it. People stop me all the time to read the poem and everyone always says the same thing, that I have a very special husband to write such a wonderful poem for me. But I didn’t need a poem to know that I truly have a very wonderful husband. He shoes me that each and every day.
Thanks for a great giveaway!

My mom has always put her kids needs before hers. So, one year for her birthday, I covered a wicker basket with silk flowers and filled it with pampering products. She was so thrilled that she cried.

Such a nice collection of things! I’d be honored to win.
I love it when friends & family give me things having to do with my kids – last year I got a deck of playing cards personalized with a picture of my kids, another year a pendant etched with my son’s picture, another year a family tree blanket with all of our names.

This is going to sound completely corny. But my favorite “most-thoughtful gift” was a gift from my sister last Christmas. She’d tracked down a still-in-the-box edition of my very first “my first Barbie” that I got when I was three. It left me speechless and in tears.

I have to tell you about something my parents are doing today. One of their neighbors is dying (she has MS) and will most likely not make it through tonight. My parents, along with some other neighbors, are over at the house today, cleaning, washing sheets, stocking the fridge, as the kids and grandkids will be arriving this evening.
My mom literally took my breath away when she told me of this. What a wonderful and kind gift to give a grieving family, especially this wonderful woman’s husband…the gift of reassurance that everything is taken care of at the house, so that he can simply be there for his wife.
Thanks for the opportunity.

I was pregnant this Mothers Day so it kinda sort of counted. So my husband found a baby picture of me and him and a ultrasound picture of my daughter, and framed them. So it looked like, you + me = baby. It was so cute!

When my husband and I were dating he spent about an hour in the children’s toy section at a local store trying to find a gag gift for my birthday, and he got kicked out of the store for playing with the toys too enthusiastically. He ended up getting me a slinky, growing dinosaur tablets, and the Politically Correct Bedtime stories.

My mom is pretty much the queen of giving creative gifts, so it’s hard to pick just one that I’ve received. But perhaps my favorite was the Christmas after I was married. She had my bouquet preserved and beautifully mounted; it now hangs above the kneeling bench that we used in our wedding.

I love to read. I had received a catalog of books in the mail one year and I had gone through and circled all of the books I wanted to read. I was planning on checking them all out from the library. My birthday was a few weeks later and, to my surprise, my husband had found the catalog and gone out and bought all of the books that were circled.

Both my mother and my grandmother are deceased. I had found a picture of both of them from when my mother was a young girl. They were in the Horseshoe stadium at OSU. Being an OSU grad, it made the picture even more special. It was a small black and white photo and was a little ragged looking. My husband had it enlarged and framed for me for Christmas. I cherish it.

I wrote a poem about my niece after she was killed and shared it with my sister. She then asked if she could read it at the one year memorial we had on the side of the road where she died (car accident). It turned out to be a special gift for her.
One of the best gifts I received was a complete bedroom makeover by my husband (with the kids’ help) while I was away. He bought a new bedroom suite, lamps, fabric for a curtain across the closet, painted walls, etc. I was pregnant and very touched by his huge gift. :)

For my 25th birthday, my husband (of 4 months) made me a coupon book. In it were different items, all with 25 in it (25 minute massage, 25 treats, etc.) The last one had a picture of the two of us on our wedding day and said, “25 Eternities together”. He still melts my heart, 7 years later.

We like to give homemade teacher gifts every year. We usually make a flower pot of the class. Using sheets of foam, we cut out flower shapes & put each child’s face on a flower. Arrange in a painted pot & the teacher’s love it.

I love to journal and would love to win this prize!
The best gifts are the ones whose contents are unknown. It’s nice when people know you well enough to know what your interests are and give you a gift without needing a specific request, or just giving you a gift card. My grandma gave me a sewing box and a cookbook for my last birthday, which was very thoughtful, because those are two of my favorite things to do.
By Stephanie on 10.27.08 8:24 pm

the most thoughtful gift i’ve given is a blank recipe book that i made up for my mom. I wanted to have all of her and her mom’s recipes written down for me before she got ill. I now get to share those recipes with my family and have this book as a keepsake.

Ah…the books are absolutely gorgeous. I take such refuge in the turning of pages.
When I was little, I asked for a ballerina jewelry box every year. Every year, there was none under the tree. After I got older and had my first child, my mother asked me one year what I wanted for Christmas. I told her I wanted the ballerina jewelry box that I never got. She cried and said she hadn’t known. She thought it was just another thing on my long, long list.
Her and my Dad got me that box that year. Though it was a little girls jewelry box, it was never too late.
They gave me a very thoughtful, perhaps the most thoughtful gift that year.
Thanks for the memory :)

My aunt made homemade gifts each year for Christmas. I always looked forward to her creations.
By Elaine on 10.27.08 8:36 pm
Last year, every gift I gave was handmade. I gave gifts ranging from baked breads to hand knitted scarves and dishcloths (for my Grams who prefers them). Two of my favorites was the handbound journal and set of bright and colorful handmade “cloth napkins” I gave to a friend of mine who was trying to go “green”. The journal was bound using an old Nancy Drew cover.
Another favorite was the pendant I made for my mother in law who had recently lost her grandmother, who was one of the single most important women in her life. The pendent had a photo of her and her grandmother, which I also made by hand.

My husband one year gave me an anniversary card. Inside it, he had placed sticky notes throughout with little hints of my present. It turned out to be a belated honeymoon trip. I always pegged him as uncreative, but that really was the sweetest, handmade card.

I have made dozens of prayer shawls for people over the years. I made one for one of my dearest friends who moved to another state. She wasn’t gone for too many months when I received a package in the mail from her. She had knitted me a prayer shawl. I just sat on the couch and cried. Not only was it a wonderful gift to receive, it was a gift to also know that receiving one was really something special.

One of the most thoughtful gifts was one my husband and I received for our 1 year anniversary. We had just bought a house and didn’t have much money so we didn’t have any plans. Our parents got together and gave us gift certificates to a resort. We had enough for a few nights stay and all our meals and some for shopping, we had a great time!

I asked my mom to borrow her address book so I could get addresses to send out holiday cards after I had moved out many years ago. I then bought a new address book and redid her entire address book with all the current and correct names and address in it. It didn’t have tons of scratched out stuff any longer and pages falling out, etc. She said that was one of her most favorite gifts she ever received.

My most thoughtful gift was from an ex-boyfriend of mine. We didn’t have a lot of money at the time, and so he went through a ton of travel magazine and surprised me with a “trip around the world”. We sat at the foot of the bed and he took me on a trip through Europe, Asia and Australia, finishing up in the US. It was such a wonderful gift!
By Suzanne B. (Crunchy Green Mom) on 10.27.08 10:00 pm
hmmm…that is kinda hard. I would have to say the mothers day gifts from my children last year 8 yr old picked me out a necklace because she said that I always say I never have jewelry. My 7 yr old got me a coffee maker because he knew mine had some “issues”. and my 3 yr old got me a new iron because mine wasn’t working that well. The sweetest part was that they remembered on their own all the little things that I said and that just really touched me.

I really like the poem by Maya Angelou “Phenomenal Woman”. I found the perfect font, the perfect matte, and frame (custom to each woman) and gave it to some “phenomenal women” that meant a lot to me.

I love making gifts but the first one that came to mind was way back when I was in my early 20s. A friend and I always had “quote” fights and so I decided to make him a qoute book. The whole thing was handmade by me including the paper. Then I hand wrote several of his favorite quotes and added a few others for several pages and left the rest blank so he could add more himself. He loved it and I loved making it… wiicked13 [at] yahoo [dot] com

Last year for Christmas, I gave my sister something special every day from December 1 to December 25- it was everything from little gifts, candy, outings to just sitting and chatting over a nice cup of hot cocoa. It was so much fun to do! Thank you for the great giveaway!

What a beautiful giveaway! The most creative gift I’ve ever given was a picture we made for my grandmother. I had everyone in the family place their hand in paint and press it onto a piece of posterboard. Then, each person wrote five “grandma memories” along each finger. Then, we had the posterboard professionally matted and framed.

Ketchup. How thoughtful can that be? Well, my good friend was marrying a man who slathers ketchup on EVERYTHING. So, as part of her bridal shower, I gave her a bunch. A few months into the wedding it was gone already!

I kept all of the e-mails that my husband (then boyfriend) and I sent back and forth my senior year of college (over 200 pages). On our first anniversary I printed them all out and put them in a binder and gavie it to him/us. It is so much fun to go back and read those (we were so young and so in love!).

Since we didn’t celebrate Christmas as a kid, I never had a Christmas stocking. One year my kids (at the time 15, 11, 8 and 3) got together and made a stocking and stuffed it for me, and somehow managed to get it under the tree on Christmas Eve, without me knowing! It made me cry.

What a beautiful package of treats! I would definitely like to be entered.
My sister-in-laws went in together on a gift for my birthday, once. It was perfect: a small silver dragon charm hanging on a simple silver necklace chain. They knew I loved dragons, and they knew I was simple at heart, and they combined the two for a lovely piece of jewelry. It’s been my favorite ever since I got it.

The first year I was married, I spent the whole summer knitting a sweater for my hubby (whose birthday is in Sept). He’d come home from work and ask me what I did all day and I’d say I watched movies or something else trivial. It was starting to really bother him that he worked so hard while I did nothing (I was also in grad school at the time). He was so shocked when his birthday finally came and he opened his present. I was definitely forgiven for my summer spent “watching movies.”

I love homemade gifts both giving and receiving. Two years ago one of my cousins made me a litle scrapbook where everyone in the family wrote a page about why they love me. I have it out on my piano and I read it every time I feel sad.

My husband bought me a garnet necklace that I’d admired at a jewelry store. We were there during a holiday street fair, and I commented on how beautiful it was, just admiring, not hinting or anything. When I opened my Christmas gift I was completely surprised to see the necklace! I think I was more pleased that he’d noted what I liked and gone back to get it than with the necklace itsef!

The most thoughtful gift that I have received is a Lemon Merigue pie from my son’s girlfriend.

One year I bought a chocolate heart box of valentine candy for my husband. But I ate all the candy first. I then made cut out hearts for each candy space. I color coded them by theme. Things I love about him. Things I respect about him. Things for him, like free time or back rub. Etc.
He loved it! I rolled each heart up and tied it with a ribbon before putting them in the candy spots.

Well, when I first started dating, my mom gave me “the talk” and a watch that my father had given her on their one year anniversary. When I look at the watch, it reminds me of what a real relationship should be like (my parents are still married to each other).

When I was young, my little sister who was about 4 at the time, took a little 3×5 pad of paper and drew a picture for each of us (her siblings) and then rolled it in a scroll and put those under the tree for presents. It was all she could do at her age and my brothers didn’t even care about it and sort of laughed at her. To me, it was the most beautiful gift I’d ever received. Even though I was a young child myself, I still saw the true beauty of that gift and to this day, that little picture of a lion means the world to me.

The most thoughtful gift I ever received was a get-well card from my step-son. We were at a point when we weren’t getting along well at all. I think he was around 11. I got really sick with the flu, and I think he was really worried about me. All the card was, was a piece of folded typing paper, but he got it signed by everyone at his bus stop. How sweet is that?

The most thoughtful gift I recieved was from my mom. She made all of us kids a scrapbook of my Grandfathers family. (he passed away 2 years ago)
I have gift I have given that I really enjoyed doing. A memory jar for my mom. I did a needle point on cloth that read Little girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice. I hot glued that to the back of the jar. Inside the jar I included things from my childhood such as sheet music, a rock I carried, and a girl scout badge…. Mom loved and it was so much fun to do.
Have a great day.

The best gift I’ve ever received was given to me by my husband (then my boyfriend). I was unable to go on our family vacation that year to my favorite place, the beach. He came to my house and created a beach for me. Yes, he hauled bags and bags and bags of sand over and put them on my deck (on a tarp) and set up a chair and a towel. It was so romantic. No wonder I married him!

the most thoughtful gift I ever received was a day off. We were hard up for money one Mothers day and all my ex could do was home made cards (which I loved). But he decided to make it my day. He and the kids did every little thing around the house that day. Even all the things I thought they never noticed that I do. It was a wonderful day and it warmed my heart to know that they appreciated me and all I do.

My most thoughtful gift is a Christmas globe for my MIL. I had my sister’s three kids a few years ago…I had them for two years. I also had 4 kids of my own. My MIL was the only one that would watch all of the kids for me…that is 7 kids under 8!! Well, my sister’s youngest boy broke my MIL’s Christmas globe and it was a globe that was VERY special to her!! It took me a couple of years to find the globe in a Christmas shoppe when I was traveling out of state. I started bawling right in the store when I finally found it!!

I love making tailored gifts for my friends. One big hit was for a friend of mine that is a knitter and coffee lover. I had a friend that worked in a local coffee shop and I asked her if she could snag me one of those clear cups with the domed lid. Inside of that I put a sein of latte colored yarn, and some remants of a cream colored yarn that I had on top of that to look like some foam, and a pair of needles (the straws). I wrapped a ribbon around it and included a gift card to her favorite cafe.

I’m going to go for the most recent creative gift I’ve received because I’ve given and received some great ones! Anyhow, when my second son was born my aunt sent me a blue piggy bank and wrote a neat little note to go with it about how she learned while raising her children to put in deposits – encouragement, etc – so that there would be something to take out when she had to make a withdraw – correcting her children. It is daily a visual reminder to keep making deposits into my son’s life!

That was nice, but I had post partum blues, I had just pushed out a ten pound baby and I was feeling ignored while everyone carried on over the big beautiful boy. My friend marsha came in late in the afternoon with a big basket just for me. It had chocolate, tea, a book, lotion for my poor belly, nail polish, thank you cards so I could get started from my hospital bed, and more. I sat and cried!!

Just recently, I have made some really cute onesies for two of my pregnant friends. They were customized with little sayings with a play on words with their last names.
And last year, a friend of mine got married, and I made a “movie blanket” for the happy couple. I crocheted a large blanket, in their wedding colors-which are also her favorite colors- that would cover their laps while watching movies, their favorite thing to do. My best friend loved it and she stole it and basically uses it for herself. Her poor hubby hardly ever gets to use it!

Back when my husband and I were dating, we were really poor. He lived in my college town and I was back home for the holidays. He didn’t have a winter coat and was walking to work every day in December. My mom drove me to the Goodwill store and I bought him a winter coat for a dollar and shipped it to him.
What’s crazy is that from pictures it looks exactly like a coat his dad owned. It might have even been the exact same one because his dad had died a few years earlier and his stuff could have ended up in Goodwill. So, a special gift.

The most thoughtful present I ever got were these two books I got from my brother. Not that the titles were ones I had told him about, but the thoughtfulness of the gift was more because my brother remembered. I mean here my brother was stationed out in Iraq in a place where he told me bombings took place almost everyday, and he remembers to log online and order these two books for my birthday. It made me cry.

The most thoughtful gift i have ever recieved was after the birth of my first child. Everyone buys you things for baby, I recieved a package just for me with personal items that are a must for new mom and some nice pamper me items. Let’s face it we done the work and we need to be remembered too. Now I do the same, instead of cute blankets or expensive outfits that baby will probably never wear I get mom things she can really use.

The best gift that I have ever gotten was a photo book that my husband made for me the first Christmas we were dating, it was pictures of our fist year together.

The most thoughtful gift I ever received was from my husband. It was a Christmas card and he had written all the reasons he loved me inside. We had just gotten back together after a seperation so it meant so much to me. I still have and cherish that card and we have been married for almost 29 years. I pull it out every once in awhile and re-read it and my heart swells with love.
Thanks so much!

The most creative gift I’ve ever received was a ceramic cat face that my daughter made for me at school. She designed it to look just like our cat, Loki, that we took in when the momma cat wasn’t able to produce enough milk to feed her babies. I still have this priceless gift displayed on a shelf near my computer. It always makes me smile to think of the time she put into creating this special gift to me.

In February, my grandfather passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. He was so young and vibrant still and I reallt think we may all still be in shock. I was told I gave the greatest gift when I wrote an original poem about my grandpa titled “My Goodbye”, framed it with a photo of he and I dancing at my wedding 5 years ago, and gave it to my grandmother after I read the poem duringt his eulogy at the visitation. There was not a dry eye in the house but I think it gave me a sense of closure and it brought immense comfort to my grandmother.
Thank you.

Four years ago, I was diagnosed with a spinal cord tumor. I had it removed and it was benign, but I am left with permanent nerve damage and chronic pain. The most wonderful gift anyone ever got for me was the massage my husband got for my birthday. I have no idea how he came up with the money (we were so broke), but the fact that he recognized my daily struggle just made me love him even more.

My sister and I scrapbooked for our Dad to let him know how much he means to us as a father, role model, and god fearing man. It was very heartfelt.

I’m probably forgetting something, but right now I’d have to say that my puppy was probably the most thoughtful…we got her because our other dog was getting older and it helped her have fun and now that she’s passed (just a few weeks ago) the puppy, who’s now 2, is helping all of us, too…plus she’s a fantastic dog :)

When my sister was pregnant with her first child, I created a drawing of her holding her new daughter. She loved it so much that she ended up having it framed and put in her daughter’s nursery room. It’s still there today, even though her daughter is 2 years old.

The most thoughtful gift I have ever gotten was small, but so sweet. Until a few years ago I was a single mom. We didn’t have much, but we got by and bought gifts via the thrift store for the most part. Well one year I was talking about how much I would love a sewing machine. My son saved up his allowance and on Christmas day I woke up to find a home made sewing kit from him. He had gathered buttons, sewing needles, thread, and fabrics that he had picked up at the thrift stores in the area with my mom. It was the sweetest thing EVER.

A few months ago I was able to surprise my husband with a weekend away for the first time in our marriage. We got married early 2004, and by the end of sept 2007, we had had 3 babies and lost 4 jobs. I saved and saved extra money for about six months, then surprised him with a hotel room 3 hours away from home. And with NO CHILDREN!! that wasn’t it. I bought tickets for 3 bands we have been wanting to see for 6 years. Then again the next night 2 more bands we were anxious to see. He didnt know about any of it!! He didnt even know who we were seeing till they were on stage! It was the best gift I have given and plan to make a picture collage of the weekend framed for him for christmas.
