WFMW – Recipe reviews to remember
Today’s WFMW is something I learned from my aunt. It’s so simple and yet so unbelievably helpful and brilliant.
Whenever we try a new recipe out of a cookbook that I own, I immediately (after dinner) write ON the recipe page how we liked it, what I’d do differently next time, and the date I first prepared it (that’s purely for nostalgia’s sake). I don’t write a novel, but I do write enough so that, years later, I can tell whether it’d be wise to make it again.
I’ve been on a kick to stop pulling new recipes off of the web and from library books and just use what I have here — millions of recipes are hidden within the 50+ cookbooks I have shamefully hoarded over the years. This helps me keep track of which ones we’ve tried and liked, and that really, really works for me.

This is such a great idea. My Mammaw used to do this and now that she is gone I love going through and reading her little notes when I start missing her. I do the same thing in my cookbooks. I hope it will be a memory for my boys one day.

While I love this idea in theory, I would have to 1) get over my feeling that writing in books is some sort of desecration–logically, I don’t think it is, I just get all goofy about actually thinking of doing it–and 2) figure out a good time to do this when my daughter wouldn’t see it, lest she think I’m taking back my house rule of not writing in books.
Maybe I could use post-it notes?

I do this from time to time and am always so pleased when I go back to use that recipe…I never remember as well as I think I will LOL Great reminder!

awesome idea to write on the cookbook, one day your daughter (and maybe G too) will love to see your handwritten notes!
And there’s no shame in collecting cookbooks! Sometimes, I just like to peruse the cookbooks I have and drool over all the yummy things I COULD make but don’t have to!

Great idea! I also put a paper clip on the page where a tried and true recipe is, so that I don’t have to search the index for it. So often a recipe is named something different than what I would call it.

Some of my favorite books are cookbooks from estate sales – all of the notes and adjustments. My favorite recipe from my grandmother is a handwritten note card and it starts off – 25 cents hamburger. lol
I started writing in only one of my cookbooks so far – but it certainly is VERY helpful.
Come by my place today to see how you can Cruise through the Holidays, in my WFMW.
Have a Great Day!

My mom has always done this. I even have a cookbook that I had as a kid that has some of her notes in it. :)
