Today’s curriculum studies focused again on dinosaurs. Dinos have always been a favorite topic of G’s (obviously) — and I am seeing R take interest in it more and more (partly because she loves her big brother and wants to do and love all that he does and loves).
We did some basic dinosaur math with some plastic dinos (I have a set of 10). We sorted them by color, then G lined them up from largest to smallest. He did this with speed and accuracy!

To make a semi-realistic dino habitat, I pulled out our tote full of Moon Sand and we dug around for a while. I threw in a couple of plastic plants from another animal set, as well as some spoons and some driftwood from our beach trip.

The kids stayed with this activity for over a half hour….enough time for me to dice up some “crunchy dino munchies” to go with lunch (raw carrots, celery, and broccoli).

We did all of our school inside today (including the messy sand) because of the heat. I just couldn’t muster enough energy to lug everything outside in the 89-degree heat. I am having a hard time accepting this Indian Summer we’re having. Tomorrow promises to be even warmer, which makes me second guess our weekly standing playdate. We may have to pull out the swimming pool or sprinklers instead.
Such wonderful books we’ve found for our dino unit — some of our own, some borrowed from Grandmama (a former kindergarten teacher) and some from the ever-faithful library:
Dinosaur Roar! by Paul Strickland
Mrs. Toggle and the Dinosaur by Robin Pulver
If the Dinosaurs Came Back by Bernard Most
Whatever Happened to the Dinosaurs? by Bernard Most
How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon? by Jane Yolen
The Dinosaur Who Lived in My Backyard by B. G. Hennessy
