The bucket o’ buttons I bought for sorting is humongous. There are probably 1,000 or more buttons in there — all shapes and sizes. To sort them by exact color would take 8-9 bowls at least.
Then it hit me. Why not limit our bowls to four and group according to color similarity and color families in a broad sense?
I helped get things started by dropping in a few as examples. We had four bowls/families:
1. Reds/pinks
2. Oranges/yellows
3. Blues/greens/violets
4. Neutral colors (black, white, beige, gray)
This was a bit more challenging for both kids because they had to stop and think about the hue of the button they were holding to see which bowl it would fit in best.
I can see how this project can help them learn to make generalizations and practice early skills such as approximating and rounding. It also serves to help them have a better grasp of the color wheel, noticing and realizing why certain colors are close together on the spectrum.
And I have to admit, the end result was visually stunning!
