The first part of the week, the weather was a bit nippy, so we opted to stay inside and play. That’s fine….I had a whole mess of fun projects up my sleeve.
The first was something I didn’t expect G to have as much interest in as he did. It was called “Birds and Beaks.” Basically, the child has to move several objects from one plate to the other using only what was given (no fingers). The instruments (tweezers, toothpick, spoon, tongs) were supposed to resemble types of bird beaks. After he completed the first round, G asked, “Can I do it again the other way?” Sure! He proceeded to enjoy this little task for the next 15 minutes.
We then had a guessing game using the bird flashcards I’d put together (I used this wonderful clipart site here). When I described a bird’s appearance or described what they do or where they live, he had to guess which one I was talking about.
To offer up some semi-structureless art time, we made “open-ended bird pictures.” Basically, the kids had a paper bird shape and a few paper leaves (cut out by me) and could glue them wherever and draw on whatever they wished to complete their pictures. G drew legs, very detailed eyes, and a habitat for his bluebird.
Then on to our recycling activity! I saw this craft on Make & Takes, and realized that if we didn’t get to make it for Easter week, we could put it off until this week! G smashed the dyed eggshells we’d been saving, and then the kids set to work drizzling glue and sprinkling shells. The finished pictures were so pretty!

I like your eggshell mosaics! We tried the same project – inspired by the same site – and my 3 year old kept saying, “eeew” about the egg shells! Glad to see it worked out for someone! :)
