Hot fun in the summertime

We’ve been doing a lot outside lately, and we have pictures to prove it. The heat wave we experienced over the 4th has dissipated a bit, and we’ve been blessed with rain and cooler temperatures (as in the upper 80s), so we’ve spent a great deal of time running out our energy in God’s great, green creation.

I’m trying to fill our summer’s calendar with a plethora of things which will become etched in the kids’ memories….letting them experience things for the first time, many of which I have fond memories of as a kid myself: eating popsicles on the back patio, even right before dinnertime….swimming ANY chance we get…..splurging on ice cream while we’re out running boring errands…..making a bunch of paper airplanes to commemorate Amelia Earhart’s birthday, and then watching them *try* to fly….. (I am no aeronautics engineer).

One of the main things I wanted to do this summer was let G taste his first, true-to-the-South, good-with-or-without-an-ice-cold-RC-Cola, old-fashioned Moon Pie. Sure, I thought, I’ll just pick up some at the store when I go for the week. Wrong. They were OUT. Most people had to let me explain what they were before they realized what I was talking about. “You know….those chocolate, marshmallow-ey, gooey-graham-filled cakes? That every self-respecting Southern citizen has within the pantry?” They looked at me like I’d gone mad.

I went to two more stores and NONE of them carried the original chocolate. I found banana, white chocolate, and (gag) some mini-Moon-Pies in a strawberry flavor….but the only thing in chocolate was made by the imposter brand, Little Debbie. Oh, no. I know you didn’t leave out a space on that store shelf for the best company food of the Southern states. I was morally offended more than I was surprised. What is the world coming to?

Oh, well….maybe the MoonPie thing will come to fruition before the season’s over. In the meantime, we’ve been having tons of fun with other pastimes. I love the summer so much I could marry it.

= Learning about color mixing.

= Gardner, our little Rembrandt, composing a masterpiece.

= To commemorate the anniversary of the 1st moon landing, we had a glow-in-the-dark “moon rocks” hunt in his closet. You’d have thought we bought him a franchise of playground equipment retailers, he squealed so much.

= More moon rock explorations.

= Rainey’s first time in a sandbox.

= Gardner having more fun OUT of the sandbox.

= Rainey on a swing….a.k.a, giggle machine.

= Gardner and Chase….water fight!
